Bill Kristol, the Right-Wing Energizer Bunny of Never Being Right About Anything, once argued the Galactic Empire from Star Wars was a good thing.

Right up there with saying invading Iraq was a good idea and buying a Betamax (I can only assume he did), Bill Kristol [not to be confused of course with Billy Crystal, who is a wonderful human being] argued the Empire was on the right side of history.

On the one hand, it's a highly nuanced argument, full of well thought-out bullshit coming from a weasel-like brain that helps convince the listener that judging a person based entirely on a superficial assessment of appearance was given up on way too soon, as one might look at Bill Kristol (not Billy Crystal) and think to oneself "Hey, I bet that weasel-man is about to speak total bullshit!"

I promise I'm going somewhere with this.  Mebbe.

I've been reading up on psychopaths recently, and sociopaths specifically.  Haven't we all.  I'm not ending that last sentence with a question mark - as any sociopath will tell you, questions are a sign of weakness.

I remember back to Dexter, and before that, other stuff, that noted how successful executives tended to share a number of qualities (probably all...) with sociopaths.  In what I thought was completely unrelated, I started drawing a Stormtrooper recently for a bit of Vector practice/skilling upping, and kind of wondered how much a Stormtrooper and a sociopath have in common.

Turns out - not much.

Behaviour Sociopaths engage in:

Minimization: sociopaths attempt to assert that their behavior is not really as harmful or irresponsible as someone else may be claiming.
DOESN'T FIT - when did a Stormtrooper ever say they weren't messing everything up?

Lying.  Even when there's no reason to.
DOESN'T FIT - Stormtroopers only lie when they're being Jedi mind-tricked.

Selective inattention. Ignoring what they don't want to deal with.
DOESN'T FIT - Again, as much as they handle most situations badly, Stormtroopers still try.

Rationalization. Justifying an action for reasons other than why it was done.
DOESN'T FIT - They're just following orders.

Diversion. Changing the subject is a classic example of diversion.
MAYBE - they did seem to use some kind of KABLAMO zappy stuff when they boarded that ship in A New Hope...

Playing the victim. Portraying themselves as a victim of circumstances, in order to gain sympathy, evoke compassion and thereby get something in return.
DOESN'T FIT - they don't live long enough to be victims.  And on a side note, when did that armor ever work?  They get shot, they die - leave the armor at home, maybe you won't get shot so much...

So... Stormtroopers are not sociopaths.  Wow.  I mean, Bill Kristol is still an absurd joke of a person, but the military wing of the Galactic Empire is... surprisingly altruistic.
